Skins: An Exploration of Human Duality
In the Skins series, artist Alma invites us to delve into the complex duality of the human being through a powerful visual metaphor. Each canvas is a mirror reflecting the two layers that define us: the external and the internal.
The outer layer, with its folds and irregularities, represents the barriers and difficulties we often put up to reveal our true selves. These “skins” are the facades we build to protect ourselves, the challenges that prevent us from genuinely connecting.
However, through these same barriers, Alma allows us a glimpse of the inner layer. This second skin is the pure essence, the deepest self. It manifests itself through color: warm tones that speak of passion and vitality, or cool tones that evoke calm and introspection. The visibility of this inner layer depends on the size of the circles the artist creates, suggesting that the ease with which we reveal ourselves to others varies from person to person.
“Skins” is a series that challenges us to look beyond the superficial. It reminds us that, beneath the scars and folds of our outer layer, lies a wealth of emotions and nuances that are only revealed to those willing to look closely.
